Its 2017 and Instagram is becoming one of the major factors of our personal and business lives. As of December 2016 it has reached 600 million active monthly users and continues to grow. We are using it for everything from showing our family vacations to gaining sales for our businesses. Below are 10 tips to help you succeed on Instagram.
1. Get creative
Instagram is mostly a photo sharing platform and people love creative photos. Bright and vibrant images always tend to catch peoples' eye, and they help improve the quality of photos of Instagram. Start with trying to think out of the box and not being afraid to explore different perspectives of photography. You can also keep it simple, and be creative at the same time by playing around with the filters of Instagram.
Nobody likes to be ignored whether in-person or on social media so talk to people, reply to comments people leave on your pictures. At least try and acknowledge that you saw their comment by liking it. Use the search bar provided to find things that interest you and like, comment, and share them. Don't be afraid to express yourself. Be very generous with compliments its a great way to break the ice and start a conversation. It gives people a reason to check out your feed.
3. Review activity
Remember everything you post online is public so express yourself but be mindful of what you are posting and who your audience is. For example, if you are a food blogger try and avoid posting about your political opinions. Unless it is a political post related to food.
4. Link your other social media
Connect your social media profiles like Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr , Flickr, and Swarm. Its a great way to cross post and reach a whole new audience.
5. Utilize #Hashtags
Hashtags are essential to growing your Instagram audience and gaining followers. Make sure your hashtags are relevant to your post. I personally am not a fan of using #like4like, #follow4follow type of hashtags. Yes they help you gain likes sometimes but they won't help you build a long-term engaged community and are as good as spam. As of March 2017 Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post. USE THEM wisely. Look out for another article shortly that explains hashtag usage in more detail. 😀
6. Add a location📍
Tag your location it makes your posts more relatable to people who have also visited the same place. They're more likely to comment and follow you simply because they have something in common with you. Make sure to be careful and not reveal too much about your location. PLEASE avoid tagging your home location and stay vague unless its a public place with many people.
Share other peoples pictures to your feed. It's a great way to compliment someones work. Be sure you give proper credit to the original poster. Use an app like Repost App to make this process very easy. It is very straight forward and allows you to insert your own comment into the post as well. The app is free to use and available on iOS and Android.
8. Tag people in your posts
Take pictures and tag people or brands. This will give them a notification that you tagged them and if it's a post that is related to their work, it opens up a door for conversation. They might also start tagging you in posts they feel relate to you.
Make sure the people you tag are relevant to your post. For example, if you post a picture of a pizza don't tag a DJ unless the pizza is relevant to them. Also, its a good idea to tag relevant brands in your post. For instance, if your picture is of your meal at Cheesecake Factory TAG THEM. They will more than likely share your post to their followers.
9. Embed Instagram photos to your website
If you're serious about your Instagram feed I suggest you have your own website showcasing all your skills. Embedding your Instagram feed gives you another source of traffic to your feed. Sites like Lightwidget make the process very simple.
10. Be patient
Patients is key to success on Instagram. Post consistently but don't overdo it you will end up annoying people and losing followers. Just showcase parts of your life that you think are important and give people a good reason to be apart of your social life.
